Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in the skin, where it binds water and keeps tissue hydrated and supple. With age, the body produces less of it, and the skin loses volume and elasticity. Juvederm replaces this lost HA with a stabilized gel that restores volume, lifts folds and supports facial contours right after injection.
On its own, natural HA breaks down in the tissue within days. Cross-linking connects the HA molecules into a gel network that the enzyme hyaluronidase degrades much more slowly, so the result lasts for months instead.
Because Juvederm is HA-based, it can be dissolved with hyaluronidase if a correction or a complication requires it. This reversibility is one of the main reasons practitioners choose HA fillers over permanent or semi-permanent alternatives.
Juvederm restores volume and smooths lines, but it cannot replace surgery for significant skin laxity on the lower face and neck.
Depending on the product and treatment area, Juvederm results typically last from 6 to 24 months. Lighter gels for fine lines and lips are absorbed sooner, while denser Vycross gels for the cheeks, chin and jawline last the longest (see the table above). Areas with a lot of movement, such as the lips, usually need touch-ups earlier than the midface.

The most serious risk of any dermal filler is accidental injection into a blood vessel. The FDA describes it as an:
